Boulder, CO Family Documentary Photography

Cliché, but true: Being a parent is the hardest round-the-clock job out there, but it’s also the most rewarding. Amidst all the hard work, and let’s face it, monotony, we often forget to stop and appreciate all the precious little moments that keep us going. You know what I mean… Even during the chaos that is mealtime, clean up, errands, swimming lessons, and school drop off, there are these little flashes of amazingness that we need and want to hold on to.

You may feel like your life is boring and not worth documenting, but I pinky swear to you, that’s not the case. Your family is unique, fun, and special! My job is to make beautiful and memorable pictures of the beauty that resides in all the moments of your life.

What is documentary family photography?

A documentary family photography sessions entails inviting me (the photographer) to spend time with your family in its natural state and make pictures of ALL the moments in your day (from the most tender to the most insane). I know it can sound intimidating to allow yourselves to be so vulnerable with someone you don’t know. I understand, I have felt all those feelings too. Someone making pictures of me before coffee and a shower…YIKES!

But, for me, those are some of my favorite times of day with my family and the moments I want to remember. Like waking up to my toddler crawling into our bed – swoon (and yawn!). The pictures I love most of my family are the ones that capture real moments of our family life (which often means I am not showered or looking my best). I’m okay with that, because my favorite pictures aren’t about how perfect I look, but about the connection I’m experiencing with the person in the frame. I want to remember these fleeting times of my daughter’s childhood and parenthood. I want to be able to share these tender and chaotic moments with her when she is older.

Is documentary family photography right for you?

  • Do you have a sense of humor?
  • Do you encourage your kids be kids?
  • Are you nostalgic and/or sentimental?
  • Do you feel this special time in your life is passing you by at warp speed?
  • Can you laugh at yourself?
  • Do you like doing things as a family?
  • Do you like to have fun?
  • If you have answered yes to at least three of these questions, I say, “Let’s do this!”

What are the benefits of documentary family photography?

  • No need for anyone to act or look perfect. Actually, the more chaos, the better the pictures.
  • No need for the kids to behave how they never behave. Let them do their thing.
  • No need to buy new coordinating outfits that match your home décor.
  • No need to go someplace you never go. Just you and your family in your element.
